Dunkeswell Village Hall News

Past Event

We held a Villages in Action event on February 11th. Ian Thompson and Mark Duff entertained us superbly with original songs and instrumentals inspired by the often bleak but beautiful landscape of the Scottish Highlands. Ian’s varied work life provided the basis for songs about sheep shearing in New Zealand, trucking from Glasgow down south and fencing in the Scottish isles. We learned that, over the years, a lot of tenant farmers have been displaced by rich landowners although some security has been obtained by the setting up of crofting agreements. Mark’s playing of low and high whistles, Irish pipes, a bouzouki and the bodhran drum wonderfully evoked the haunting landscape and sometimes sad tales. For jollier pieces his fingers flew! It was a very good evening enjoyed by the good number in the audience. Thank you to all those who enabled the evening to go so well.

Coming up – dates for your calendar

On April 8th we shall be putting on our annual Wine and Wisdom quiz. This has proved very popular with good humoured rivalry between the teams and a keen sense of competition. We have a cup for the winning team.

Last year our Go Karting competition proved so popular that we are holding another one on May Bank Holiday ( Monday 29th May ). So get those designer heads working and carpentry tools out to see if you can win the prize for the best go- kart this year. The event will take place at the Village Hall at midday and there will be a BBQ to keep up your energy levels. More details to follow in a future edition of the magazine.
